Step By Step Process
1. Outline the shape of your nails on a paper leaving the outer edge longer than the actual size.
2. Now place these shapes on the fabric you have chosen and cut them out.
3. Wash your hands and pad them dry.
4. Apply a cost of adhesive agent to the nails or if the adhesive is not available then a thick coat of a transparent nail polish will also work.
5. Now place the cut out fabric pieces on the nails polished with the adhesive before it dries up.
6. Smoothen out the creases and press lightly and let it dry.
7. When it dries completely with the help of a scissors cut the extra fabric and give shape to the nails.
8. Finally apply a coat of the transparent nail polish and we are done.

How To Select The Fabric
1. Silk:
It is very popular and stylish. It is very fine and has a strong weave. It gives the finish of a French polish.

2. Linen: It is much thicker than silk. It stays opaque even after the adhesive is applied. Remember to apply a layer of nail polish colored or transparent on it.

3. Organza:
It is stiff yet light so it is easy to cut and shape. It stays on for days without needing to be touched up.

Georgette, chiffon or cotton or any fabric can be used. Only thing to be kept in mind is that it should not limp or hang lose.

Choosing The Color And Design
Gone are the days of baby pinks and conservative colors. Today gold, red, green and blue are in. Cyber colors and textures are taking over. The secret here is to match colors and designs with your outfit. If you are wearing club wear type, splash out with floral textures. You can also try gold, green for an earthly feel. Do not forget the tribal and animal prints.

    Not to be underestimated is the benefits for the artist to bend down each morning - it is said to help her digestive system, reproductive organs and to help overall stretching of the body. Kolam requires the artist to be well focussed and improves the concentration with which the artist begins her day.
    It used to be a matter of pride to be able to draw large complicated patterns without lifting the hand off the floor (or unbending to stand up). The month of "Margazhi" was eagerly awaited by young women, who would then showcase their skills by covering the entire width of the road with one big kolam. It was indeed a test of mastery, as one cannot repeat a pattern for 30 days.

    When people get married, the ritual kolam patterns created for the occasion can stretch all the way down the street. Patterns are often passed on generation to generation, mother to daughter.
    Kolam is not so flamboyant as its other Indian contemporary, Rangoli, which is extremely colorful. However, the beauty of a kolam, bordered with blood-red "kaavi" (red brick paste) is also considered exceptional.

    Purpose of Kolam
    Decoration was not the sole purpose of a Kolam. In olden days, kolams used to be drawn in coarse rice flour, so that the ants don't have to work so hard for a meal. The rice powder is said to invite birds and other small critters to eat it, thus inviting other beings into one's home and everyday life: a daily tribute to harmonious co-existence. It is a sign of invitation to welcome all into the home, not the least of whom is Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of prosperity. The patterns range between geometric and mathematical line drawings around a matrix of dots to free form art work and closed shapes. Folklore has evolved to mandate that the lines must be completed so as to symbolically prevent evil spirits from entering the inside of the shapes, and thus are they prevented from entering the inside of the home.

    The women in southeastern India traditionally cover their thresholds every morning with elaborate designs drawn with rice powder. Girls learn the ritual from their mothers and other female relatives, and kolam skills are considered a mark of grace, dexterity, discipline and concentration. Drawing the kolam figures is an important part of the Tamil Nadu culture and landscape. But with their orderly and often highly symmetrical designs, which frequently group into families, kolams are also expressive of mathematical ideas. In the last few decades, kolam figures have attracted the attention of computer scientists interested in describing images with picture languages. Different picture languages have been developed to describe different kolam families.

    Lose weight the healthy way

    Pick the right diet along with regular exercise to optimise your weight-loss programme, instead of resorting to fads or pills.

    Recently, great advances have been made with regard to weight-loss pills and bariatric surgery. However, they are short cuts that must be avoided. The pillars of a healthy weight loss still remain weight-loss diets and increased energy expenditure every day.

    It is a myth that long-term weight loss can be achieved with either dieting or with exercise alone. Both are critical. Moreover, often three to six months down the line, theres a decline in interest and consequent non-compliance in any strict diet or exercise regimen. Before trying any short cuts, do keep in mind that, of the several commercially available remedies for obesity, many make exaggerated claims and are based on non-scientific principles and can lead to more harm than good. Exercise regularly.

    Blame it on our genes, we Indians need more exercise than other ethnic groups to maintain our metabolism. It is advisable that you do a combination of aerobic activity and muscle-strengthening exercises. Remember, when you have shed those unhealthy kilos (and inches), you need to stick with intensive and consistent exercise to prevent weight gain.

    Eat a healthy diet.

    Most diets can be subdivided into four categories based on the combinations of macronutrients recommended: very low-carbohydrate, low-carbohydrate, very low-fat and balanced diet (see table). These plans modify the typical macronutrient ratios by increasing or decreasing the intake of dietary fat, carbohydrate and protein.

    High-Protein Diets (Atkins Diet): Higher protein intakes may have greater satiating effects than higher carbohydrate intakes, but further research is needed to prove their efficacy. High animal protein intakes have been linked to higher risks for coronary heart disease (CHD), cancer, as well as osteoporosis and kidney disease.

    Low-Carbohydrate Diets (The Zone Diet): Low-carbohydrate diets may be accompanied by greater weight loss than other diets because of greater loss of water. However, these diets may be hard on the average Indian person because of the traditional high intake of carbohydrates.

    High-Fat Diets (Atkins Diet): These diets are popular in the West, however, in India's vegetarian is often not possible to increase fat content of ones diet. Also, long-term use of very high-fat diets for maintaining weight increases serum cholesterol concentrations and the risk of CHD.

    Low-Fat Diets (Ornish Diet): Long-term use of the Ornish diet decreases the risk of heart disease by nearly 60%. Weight loss through these diets is achieved mostly because of the reduction in calories and not because of increased metabolism.

    Trends in Weight-Loss Therapies

    Some promising tips that are being scientifically tested.

    1. Sip on green tea and coffee more often to rev your metabolism.

    2. Fill up on of water and fibre. It will keep you satiated and up your metabolism.

    3. Eating more monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), found in avocados, olives, nuts, seeds, peanut butter, dark chocolate and olive oil, expedites losing inches in the core area. (Prevention's Flat Belly Diet embodies this research.)

    4. Replace your meals with protein snacks to maintain muscle mass.
